If you have loved many dogs your heart is very big.”- Erica Jong. He was lifted one last time. After an agonizing consultation with my mother and brother a decision was arrived at. I knew this day was coming. Rover was no pup; he was ten years old with a growing number of health issues. He was no longer the frisky Rover, had became lethargic. In recent times Rover’s abdomen became extended. Upon examination the vet, ordered her assistant to draw fluid from his abdomen. The drawn fluid had traces of blood. Rover was not going to get better. His condition was one of management that would require him to be on a particular drug until death. I braced myself for Rover’s prognosis. Additionally, pop culture has also been impacted by movies. Those of us who are older will fondly recall Sundays, when the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC), the only television station at that time televised Sunday Matinees. It was a time for families to watch a movie and have a family conversation. This was the era before the advent of social media. Many are unaware that there is in fact a National Classic Movie Day. National Classic Movie Day is observed on May 16th. The day is set aside to celebrate the film industry and put spotlight on iconic movies that remain favorites through the years. Eye health is a critical component regarding our overall health and development. Undoubtedly, vision is the most dominant of our senses. Vision plays a critical role in every facet and stage of our lives. We often take our vision for granted, but without vision, we struggle to learn, to walk, to read, to participate in school and to work. Unfortunately, eye health is oftentimes not accessible and is rather costly; this reality is concerning especially as it relates to youngsters. It is against this background that World Sight Day is observed annually on the second Thursday of October. The day is set aside to highlight the importance of protecting our eyes and vision, raise awareness of vision impairment and blindness, and promote eye and vision care.
